WHY CHOOSE A COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGIST?

"When the other person is hurting, confused, troubled, anxious, alienated, terrified; or when he or she is doubtful of self-worth, uncertain as to identity—then understanding is called for. The gentle and sensitive companionship offered by an empathic person… provides illumination and healing. In such situations deep understanding is, I believe, the most precious gift one can give to another".

COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGIST

The process of choosing a therapist can be overwhelming, particularly when trying to work out the right fit for you and the differences between the various types of therapists. Cultural diversity and variation of psychological theories mean that Counselling Psychologists are required to be flexible and well-versed in different approaches of mind and psychology, such that they can work with any client. Counselling Psychology is strongly rooted in a relational stance, where attention is given to improving psychological functioning and well-being and validating and encouraging self-awareness and contact with emotions. Counselling psychologists may provide a sense of a relational home for clients, thus creating a supportive environment, validating connections in relationships, and emphasising the importance of showing respect and empathy.

As part of the training, Counselling Psychologists also undergo the personal therapy. Undergoing personal therapy can lead to better use of psychological skills, a more genuine connection between therapists and clients, and protection from harmful interventions due to self-awareness and experience gained from being in the client's position. Exploration and awareness of personal experiences are considered essential for the training of counselling psychologists.
